Pictures of School!

This is a picture of the library at my school. It shows a lot of the way it is, even without many students: you can see the smart board and laptops on the right, the tables for groupwork, and of course the big comfy couches where students are known to hang out and even nap during their frees. And, of course, the books! We have tons of books of all genres at Elro, both for school work and for pleasure.

Loud vs Quiet Portraits

Discussion by: JulietteM on Thu, 2011-01-20 15:18 with 0 comments

This two photos I took with the intention of contrasting. I wanted to portray loud and quiet with my friend's expression. I had some technical problems with these photos, and also the fact that my subject wasn't really going for it. I had trouble cropping them at the same place, and she didn't really understand the concept of quiet: the second photo still has a sense of smile and expression. However, I think I like it in the end, because it's quiet but not silent. The quiet picture ended up being one of the favorite I've ever taken, despite being not exactly what I intended.

This is a portrait I took of a good friend of mine. I wanted to create an expressive photo that draws the eye to her smile. One problem I had with this is that I really wanted a blank background, but it was hard to eliminated the shadows created by the lighting I had to work with. However, I love the way you can see how her smile spreads to her eyes. Just the sheer expression of the photo is what I'm proud of about it. I think for the future I want to find some work spaces with more flexible lighting, so I can really be in control of that.

Double Portrait

I took this photo with higher hopes for it than how it actually turned out. I had wanted it to be much more symetrical, and to see more of a triangle with faces of my friends. However, I couldn't quite make that happen, so I can't say I'm overly pleased with how this photo came out. That said, with some editing, I think I still have managed to come up with something decent. I noticed, when I was taking this photo, that my favorite thing about it was my friend's socks. They're awesome! So I decided to bring that to the focal point, using color. The color, is centered around the bright pink stars, and the rest of the photo fades to black and white gradually. I think this is a really interesting effect that I am definately interested in experimenting with in the future. As part of my class's portrait unit, I've been looking at the works of Chase Jarvis, who does really interesting things with color and contrast. I hope to continue to use color to notable effect in my future portraits.

Self Portrait

I decided to focus on only a small part of myself for this assignment, and fill the picture without using a background of any sort. I like all the details visible in this picture, like the way you can make out indavidual strands of hair and eyelashes.  I also like the way the blue of the bow contrasts with the more neutral tones of the rest of the picture. There's also a sense of angles and lines between the edges of my eye, eyebrows, and cheekbones, that I think guides the eye in an interesting way to take in the whole of the photo piece by piece.

Silhouettes

This is a photo that I took and edited in picnik for my class silhouette project. I decided to do something a bit different in mine, which is that I created a semi-detailed blue silhouette on a black background. I think it gives the picture a sense of being pensive and ominous, as the face just sort of looms out of the background and is detailed enough to give you an idea of the face but not a clear picture of whats going on. I also softened the edges of the silhouette and the face itself, which along with the color gives it a sense of being rather dreamlike, which I really like the idea of.

Camera Settings

I too this photo to experiment with the settings on my camera. I've been exploring macro for some time now because I find it interesting the way it brings focus to particular aspects of the picture while blurring out the others, giving you a main image on a sort of blurred background.

When I took this post, however, I was also experimenting with the color settings on my camera. My camera has a vivid setting that will make some colors picked up more strongly than others. This helped me make the red of this flower very vivid. I also like the way it picked up the flower's gradient as the petals bloom out from the center of the flower.
