Cajun Food

Discussion by: Voices on the Gulf on Wed, 2011-03-30 19:52 with 0 comments

I chose to do my I-Search project on Cajun Food. I chose this topic because I really like to eat. My eating habits took a major effect on why I chose my research topic. While researching this topic, I would really like to find out how did this specific type of food come along in the Louisiana culture. I also want to know what makes the food Cajun. I really have an interest in food so that's why I chose my topic.

What is Childhood Depression?

Discussion by: Voices on the Gulf on Tue, 2011-03-29 23:04 with 0 comments

What is Childhood depression? When is it diagnosed? What are the treatments? And what contributes to the disorder? These are some of the questions I would like to answer when researching for my i-search paper. Reflecting on the oil spill, I thought of the men and women that loss jobs and even their lives. And then I thought about their kids and younger siblings. How does a young child deal with the sudden loss of someone that plays such a significant role? How does a child that was fortunate to have all their wants, deal with barely getting what they need? In addition to the all spill, natural disasters, happen all over the world and affects the youth as well. From Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans to Earthquakes in Chile and Japan, natural disasters have scarred our earth, our homes, and our lives. How does a kid copewith being stripped from the only home he or she has known. And to make matters worse some have to leave without a familiar face at their side. Could these things contribute to Childhood Depression and if so, what are we doing to insure these kids will have a normal and happy childhood?

Louisiana Cuisine

Louisiana Cuisine is the topic that I’m leaning toward for my research paper. The reasons that I want to write on this topic is because of my experiences. My experiences, in the United States Army Reserves, these military experiences  in various countries had me thinking why do we cook the way we do, where do our recipes originate from and lastly are the recipes and cuisine that we eat just incorporated in the south, or Louisiana, or anywhere else in the world for that matter. I hope to come out with a broader knowledge of the cuisine that we take for granted on a daily basis. Food to me is a part of my heritage and learning more on this topic will not only open my eyes but the eyes of others from different parts of the world.

Mardi Gras

I chose Mardi Gras as my topic for the I-Serach paper. I follow the local Mardi Gras every year as they go from house to house chasing chickens, dressed in thier costumes and begging for money. I would like to know more about this holiday. Why do they dress in costumes, chase chickens and beg for money? I would like to know why the some people celebrate Mardi Gras different than we do. Why do some towns have parades and throw beads instead of chasing chickens? Is Mardi Gras only celebrated in the Louisiana? I have many questions about this holiday that I hope I can answer through  proper research and study.

Nuclear Power

For my I-Search paper, I intend to learn/write about Nuclear power (As I'm genuinely curious) with the focus being how fission power and fusion power compare, both in cost and energy output, to other sources of power, both non-renewable and renewable.

Magnolia

For my I-search paper I have chosen to research the history of Louisiana’s state flower, the magnolia. I’ve chosen this subject because I’ve always wondered why would someone choose this particular flower to represent Louisiana? I also chose to write about the magnolia flower because this flower seems to be real important to the state of Louisiana, but why? I’m picking this topic also because the magnolia flower is really pretty and I am a huge fan when it comes to different kinds of flowers. Some of my questions that I will be researching about this topic are as followed. Why was this flower chosen? Who was given the opportunity to assign Louisiana this particular flower? When was it declared the state flower? What is its significance to Louisiana? Where can it be found? What kind of plant is it? And what season does it bloom in? There’s plenty more questions that I have but these were just few of plenty. But I would have to say that my main question Is, why the magnolia flower to represent this state? Why not a tulip?

Tornados

Discussion by: Voices on the Gulf on Sun, 2011-03-27 15:10 with 0 comments

A tornado is defined as a violently rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. Tornadoes occur mostly in the mountain areas of the United States. So it is odd for tornado is hit in the south of Louisiana where hurricanes mostly occur. Sometime in the afternoon of Saturday March 5, 2011 a tornado touched down on the north side of Rayne, Louisiana. Damaging more than 100 homes, injurying eleven, and killing one. Authorities say the tornado sprung from a vast storm system kicking up abundant moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. I was shocked when I heard about the tornado that hit, even though I was at work in lafayette. Thankfully my home and all my friends and family were safe and unharmed. This tornado had a really big affect on me and my small hometown because our high school was damaged badily, and it killed one of our local resident. Living in south Louisiana it is expected that you will experience hurricanes and bad thunderstorms, but these are natural disasters that you can be warned for and have time to prepare or evacuation. Tornados are completely unexpected with only a few warning signs, but definitely not a storm you can prepare for.

The Ripple Effect

The Ripple Effect

As a native of Louisiana, I have many family and friends whose livelihoods depend on the oil industry. I have seen first-hand the negative effects of President Obama’s deep-water moratorium. Unemployment, repossessed homes, and bankrupted businesses are just a few of these damaging effects. The delayed drilling has created a ripple effect encompassing the entire Gulf region and beyond. We are struggling against our own tsunami; its far-reaching wave is drowning our economic future.

My curiosity and concern mount as this delay continues. Though the moratorium has been lifted, the administration has imposed new safety regulations. These new permits are required before oil companies can resume deep-water drilling. Noble Energy was approved the first new safety permit. This is a step in the right direction, but more are required to improve our economic situation.

Swamps

Discussion by: Voices on the Gulf on Sat, 2011-03-26 17:22 with 0 comments

For my paper I-Search paper I really wanted to do it on
something environmental because the environment and its importance has always been
an interest of mine.  After giving it
some thought, why not do it on something environmental that is a unique and major
part of Louisiana. Swamps!  I hope to
learn more on why swamps are a huge part of Louisiana culture, why exactly
swamps are so useful, especially in Louisiana, what exactly could happen if the
continuance of swamp drainage occurs, and maybe even learn more about some
famous swamps!  When most people hear the
word swamp, all they think of is a an eye sore, well  I hope to prove them wrong by showing just
how beautiful and needed swamps really are!
