Technical Diving

Discussion by: ryanb on Tue, 2011-02-01 12:38 with 0 comments

I have been researching"tec diving" for an upcoming paper for my english class. I have learned a lot from taking a scuba course over the summer (for recreational diving), and I have greatly expanded my knowledge base through wikipedia, and some advanced google searching.
I have learned that the technical diving field is relatively new, and has only recently become popular. This is largely due to the fact that the science of diving has only recently been studied.

The most interesting thing that I have read about is the gas that technical divers breath at depth. Because under high pressure oxygen poisening is much more probable, it has become common to breath mixes that have higher concentrations of nitrogen. This mixture is called nitrox. Nitrox is used commonly in recreational diving because it increases your bottom time, and decreases your surface time, which allows recreational divers to dive more per day.

Revised Journal Entry

From 1.24.11

A little background: I am reading assorted stories by Edgar Alan Poe, and the prompt was do describe something about the text that is different than your previous experience.

Edgar Alan Poe is a famous poet, and horror writer. Most know about "The Raven", "Anabelle Lee", "The Tell Tale Heart" and things along those lines. I was the same way until my recent purchase of the complete Poe; all of his shorts and all of his poems all wrapped up in one package. Since then, I have not been able to put it down.

Poe is substantially different than anyone I have read, or remember reading, in his diction. His writing career took place in the early 1800's and this was a transitional phase for writing. Poe has many stories that are in the gothic style, that are sad and dark and gloomy, but he also has many that are quite the opposite. The story that I have most recently been reading is, "The Unparalleled  Adventure of One Hans Pfaal". This story is about a man who gives up his life (which at the time was a mess anyway) to travel to the moon by way of balloon.

Logan's Run

Logan's Run is a movie about a world in which the truth is hidden from people. People are dressed by age, and once you turn thirty, you go to be, "renewed". No body in the world knows what happens post-renewal, but people believe that it is a good thing. Logan is an employee of the state, and he chases and "terminates" people who try to avoid renewal. Wen Logan learns about "sanctuary" ( a place where people who avoid renewal try to go), he starts askingquestions himself. He and a girl who he meets escape the city, and learn about old age.

Logan's run is a world in which everyone has everything that they need, and their society is hedonistic. Because everyone is distracted by pleasure and everyone is provided for, they don't try to investigate post-renewal life. People believe that there isn't old age. The end explains that people are more interested in truth than they are in pleasure, people want more life, as apposed to p[leasure filled life.

un Spun

We have been assigned to find examples of advertisers using the deception techniques that have been briefly described in, unSpun, I have chosen the warning sign, "A Story That's 'Too Good' ". The example that the author uses in the book is about a book that was written, who's statistics seemed to line up perfectly wit the thesis of the book. I have chosen a product as an example. In the advertisement, this product is told to cure us of our sicknesses and get us women who want to be with us because we'll be, "strong men".

NO Child Left Behind

I have been reading about the No Child Left Behind act on You Decide.  Tis website is interesting in that it present both side of the argument and asks you to make up your mind, which is more than could be said about most sources.

Design Thinking

In our english class, we have ben looking into the  A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink. I chose to carry around a design notebook and re-design things that annoy me, or that I run into on a daily basis.

This, to my suprise, turned out to be rather difficult...  When I started my week, I was actively thinking about things that I wanted to redisign, naturally I couldn't think of any. Eventually I gave up on that idea, and started forgetting about the assignment. As this happened, I began thinking subconsciously about more and more things that really annoy me, or that I think could be designed in a much better fashion.

among my redesigns are:

- the cover of Daniel Pink's Book ( thought that was ironic); it has a cut out and is just asking to be torn and defaced ( that's a pun)

-  the spine of a three ring binder; if you make the spine out of metal, crushed rings would be a thing of the past
