Why Does Global Warming Matter Anyways?

Discussion by: katiestefanich on Fri, 2012-02-24 13:57 with 4 comments

“Warnings from the scientific community are becoming louder, as an increasing body of science points to rising dangers from the ongoing buildup of human-related greenhouse gases — produced mainly by the burning of fossil fuels and forests.” (NY Times) The most important thing people need to understand about global warming is how much it is affecting our would. Every day, the more pollution we release into the air, the more the earth is changing around us. People who don’t believe that this is happening should look at the temperature over the last few decades.

Staying Awake is Killing Us

Let’s be honest. We’ve all had those nights where we just didn’t get enough sleep. Maybe we were up late working on homework or hanging out with friends. Or possibly we had to wake up extra early to be somewhere. And sometimes, we just can’t sleep. Obviously, no one likes not getting enough sleep, but we usually shrug it off. “I’ll go to bed early tomorrow night.” Or “I can sleep all weekend!”

Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day. February 14th. The national day of love. We give cards, candy and flowers to those we love. This day is used to let that special someone how we really feel about them. We go out of our way to spread love to everyone around us. But why? What makes this day in February different from any other? A man named Valentine may be to thank.

Comparing Databases

In searching four different databases, I was able to find some valuable information, while still failing to discover all that I wish I could have. While searching Historical New York Times, NewsBank, Utah Digital Newspapers, and World Book Online, I was really only able to use two of the databases. NewsBank wouldn’t allow me to log on because I didn’t have the right kind of library card. And Utah Digital Newspapers failed to load any article that I clicked on. Historical New York Times gave me all the information I could need.

Chasing Ice: Inspiring Others

I recently viewed a Sundance Film Festival movie called “Chasing Ice.” The film follows a photographer determined to track the development, or lack thereof, of icebergs over time. We watch as he struggles to develop camera systems that won’t get knocked down or broken by falling snow and ice and will take a picture every hour of an iceberg. The cameras were set up in Greenland, Iceland, Alaska, and Montana.

Recently, a study has been performed in which the amount of pain males versus females feel was compared. As many know, men oftentimes seem to complain more when they are sick or hurt. However, it has been found that females are much more sensitive to pain than has been originally thought. Due possibly to hormones, genes or psychological factors, it has been found that women feel much more pain that the average male.

Illegal Immigration

I believe that illegal immigrants need to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship because everyone deserves equal rights when coming to a new country. If one person needs to attain citizenship to live in America, the next person should, also. As The Federation for American Immigration Reform says, “Most illegal aliens do not pay income taxes.

If anyone hasn’t seen the Youtube video “Lily’s Disneyland Surprise!” it is quite necessary. The video consists of parents asking a young girl if she wants to open a birthday present early. Of course she says yes and she is handed a backpack full of treats. Including Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse clothes.

Maybe We Should Listen to Our Parents...

We’ve all been scolded by our mom as we’ve snuck a finger-full of cookie dough while she was baking cookies. And we’ve all heard the same story, “Don’t eat raw cookie dough, the eggs are raw and bacteria in them could make you sick.” And we’ve all continued to eat raw cookie dough, it’s so good!

Saint Nicholas

St. Nicholas Artist: Susan Seals

December sixth is the feast day of Saint Nicholas. He has become “famous” for giving money and candy to poor people. There was once a poor man with three daughters. He didn’t have dowries for his daughters, so no man would take them and they would have to be sold into slavery. But on three separate occasions, sacks of money for their dowries were placed in their shoes during the night and they were able to get married.
