Research Resources

After beginning my research in the Salt Lake City Library database, I have already learned a great amount and realized the capability of my topic. As of now my research topic is Greek resistance during WWII and the role it exhibited in determining the war. There was an excessive quantity of information and I can spend a lot of time researching this. Some sites were definitely more helpful than others, but I still need to take a closer look.

Soul Train

“Love, Peace, and Soul.” These words became characteristic of Don Cornelius and the legacy he left behind: Soul Train. On February 1, 2012, he was found dead at his home in California from what appears to have been a suicide. In 1970, Don Cornelius established a TV series known as Soul Train that displayed music acts to all audiences and especially provided a bridge for black cultural. The show was an instant hit. It was one of the longest-running TV series in history that last all the way up to the mid 1990’s.

Florida Primary

Tonight marks the eve of the Florida primary of the GOP for the 2012 presidential election. Although the two front runners so far have been Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, Romney is predicted to win by a safe amount. Prior to all of this, Romney won both Ohio and New Hampshire while Gingrich won South Carolina. The two have been bucking heads more than ever and have been throwing each others “personal baggage” back and forth. It is estimated that Romney has spent about 17 million dollars on advertising in Florida while Gingrich has spent about 5 million.

Reducing Defense Spending

The budget crisis has proven to be detrimental to the United States by devastating the economy both at home and abroad. The question can no longer be should we cut spending but when. Washington needs to get on board with the American people and realize we can not advance our country by causing more problems. Excessive spending is like trying to pull ourselves out of a bucket with the handle. Overtime spending will be reduced in most areas and one of those should be defense spending.

New York City

Recently, I traveled to New York City for my first time where I was exposed to all sorts of new things. It is called “the city that never sleeps,” and it lives up to its nickname. I have actually been to New York once before, but that was only the airport and that never counts. I have always considered myself more of a small town kind of person, but after visiting New York I think I could live there.

A Letter from Birmingham Jail

Recently in my English class we read Martin Luther King’s Letter from Birmingham Jail. The letter was written in 1963 in the heart of the civil rights movement while King was in jail for organizing a non-violent protest. In jail, King produced one of the most magnificent pieces of English literature I have come to acknowledge along with additional people and scholars. Segregation and the oppression of the Negro is the prevailing theme of the letter that King challenges it with his brilliant wisdom. The reasoning behind King’s letter is what attracted my attention.

Today, December 7th, is a very significant day filled with much history. This day is particularly known for the remembrance of the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Seventy years ago, the entire Pacific fleet was at dock in close formation when Japanese naval and air forces raided and inflicted overwhelming casualties. The Japanese suffered very few damages and their endeavor was considered a huge success.

Daniel Craig's Revelation

It would be easy to assume that all celebrities are nincompoops without having learned about Daniel Craig, also know as James Bond. He summarizes the Kardashians up better than anyone else. Personally, I have an utter abhorrence to that family and everything it stands for. I can honestly say I do not even know why they are famous. Nonetheless, Daniel Craig is a simple man who believes “he’s got a good reason for all the secrecy” in his life. He is rightfully correct. Nowadays, it is nearly impossible to be a celebrity without loosing privacy and respect among other things.

Currently, politics are more polarized than they have ever been. Republicans and Democrats are often unable to find issues where they agree on until now. President Obama recently stated that it is time to withdrawal from Iraq and the United States military has begun making the preparations to do so. Together, a majority of Republicans and Democrats agree with Obama’s decision, despite immense opposition to the president in regard to other issues.
