The years in full

Discussion by: lifeinthe21 on Tue, 2012-05-08 16:14 with 0 comments

The death of Osama Bin Laden in the last couple of years has been a recent event that has certainly impacted the world in the last few years Obama represented terrorism and fear to a lot of Americans. Lot's of Americans saw it as justice when he was killed. He represented evil and death. His death represented justice and closure to those who lost their lives during September 11th. But his death did not solve all the problems that we hoped it would solve.

I actually learned something senior year

Most people don't think they will learn anything their senior year of high school. They think it will be easy, that we will my occupied with applying to college and having fun. Well surprisingly I did learn something this year. On school we have to take religion, this year the topic is morality and justice. I learned a lot in this class. I learned that everything we do here in salt lake city, can have an impact all over the world. I learned that moral and ethical are not interchangeable. Something can be moral but not ethical, or ethical but not moral.

What do I write?

As I sit here, in the library at school, I am trying to come up with something to write about for one of my last youth voices of the year. And I can't really think of anything to say. We have twenty days of school left, and while I don't feel like doing anymore schoolwork, I don't know how ecstatic I am about that fact. Although I can't complain, I like summer, like everyone else, and I am ready for 2 and a half months of relaxation and fun, as well as nervousness and freak outs about freshman year in college. Time does fly doesn't it?

All in a pocket

I am writing this on my iPhone from a Barnes and Noble. This is 21st century technology at work, allowing me to do my youth voices post from a device that is no bigger then a wallet but can do more things then a regular desktop.

What's in a name?

Out of my own curiosity I have been wondering what the most common baby names are nowadays. Is there a trend? Do some names go in and out of fashion? In 2010 the top three most popular boys names were: Jacob, Ethan and Michael and the top three most popular girls names Isabella, Sophia and Emma. Then I went back to 1993, the year I was born, to see the most popular names then. Top three boys names were: Michael, Christopher and Matthew and the top three for girls was Jessica, Ashely and Sarah. Seems like the name Michael is the only one that seemed to be popular at both times.

For my research paper I am researching the causes of depression. Over the last few weeks we have been exploring different ways to research, like using databases, search engines and blogs. It has been a very interesting experience using the internet to research especially with so much information out there. I found out some really good information.

If you want to look like those models on the covers of magazines like Cosmo, Glamour and Seventeen, then stop trying. They aren't real.

Along with the multitude of new technology comes the ability to turn people who look like everyone else, into people that no one can ever look like no matter how hard they try.

This commercial is by dove, it shows how they turn an everyday person into the model that you see on billboards and at bus stops, http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5050540336573235711.

How important is a death?

As seen in the news for the last week, famous singer Whitney Houston died last saturday. The whole world is mourning the loss of a great singer. Her family is mourning the loss of someone they love. But yesterday at the dinner table my sister brought up an interesting point. She was talking about how she saw this thing on this site about how in the same week a particular solider had died over in Iraq but no one knows except his family, they didn't do multiple tributes to him at the Grammy's, and his funeral will not make the front page.

For the next five weeks in our english class we will be working on a research paper on a topic of our choice. Not only will we learn about the topic we chose but we will also learn how to use databases and how to gather information from other sources. This week we are exploring different databases. The first database I explored was the SIRS Issues researcher. My topic of research is depression. They have a whole section on mental depression. It has the latest debates on things depression related. Currently one debate is over whether or not children with depression should be medicated.

This week we have started watching the movie Hotel Rwanda. We are watching it to see what happens when prejudice becomes deadly. It is a story of the Rwandan Genocide when the Hutu tribe tried to wipe out the Tutsi tribe. This movies shows a lot of killing and it is very disturbing. As a student living in Utah I don't come into daily contact with genocide everyday. It's a whole different world from mind. But that doesn't mean it's any less important. It is so hard to remember that there is genocide going on around the world while we are going to work and school everyday.
