The Value of Social Networking

Discussion by: KatieWood1022 on Tue, 2012-05-08 16:25 with 0 comments

The Social Network. The network of people in your home. On your screen. Accessible with the click of a button. Myspace. Facebook. Twitter. Instagram. Social networks are a key piece to today's society and their values in society are rising with their monetary value. Only weeks ago, Instagram (the Social Network where you and your friends can take a picture and make it "urban" or weathered looking) was bought out by Facebook. The price 1 Billion dollars. All for a company where the main selling point is a crappy looking picture.

HOLI-Festival of Colors

Holi is the Hindu celebration of colors. It is a day spent chucking chalk at friends and family and the celebration itself is about inclusiveness, hence people from other cultures participating. When I went to Holi, I realized much of it was people that weren't even Hindu, half of the people probably didn't even know it was a Hindu celebration. And, after washing the chalk off places i didn't even know were there, I thought if the attendance of these free spirited teens and, lets be honest-to some degree inebriated -teens and college kids had offended the traditional Hindus.

Celiac Disease: Not just an Intolerancy

Everyone knows the common ones. Peanuts, strawberries, tree-nuts, soy, etc. But theres one no one has ever really even started to consider until now. Gluten intolerance. No wheat, no barley, no rye. Bread is taken away, cake is taken away even some salad dressings you can't even have. But there are intolerances and there are diseases. Celiac disease is a gluten intolerant disease, however, it doesn't result in hives, or rashes, or even throwing up. The consequences are far more serious.

Mean Girls

Everyone knows the legendary movie "Mean Girls." It showed how messed up High school really is and lets be honest here, it hit the nail on the head. Girls in high school are fierce. They are cruel. They ruin your high school life without a second thought. It truly was hitting the nail right on the head. Even the Burn Book can be transferred to our everyday High school life, though the internet has taken over and most Burn entries are on Facebook or Twitter. High School is the four years of insecurities and judgments.

Emergency Care

Today my mother needed emergency care. My father and I got her into the car and sped down to the clinic in hopes of receiving help. However, when we got to the clinic there was an hour wait. There were people that looked perfectly normal all ahead of us while my mother writhed in pain in the crowded waiting area. My father, frustrated and worried, got up and asked the woman at the front desk if there was any other place with a shorter wait that was open on Sundays. She answered no and my father came back and sat down.

Abortion, What's Really Behind It?

Discussion by: KatieWood1022 on Fri, 2012-02-24 14:04 with 5 comments

Abortion. It is a huge issue in religion, government and in general, society. But what is really behind it? What are other countries positions on it? What are the facts. Since I have been researching it I have found that many people against it only argue that you are murdering a baby. But when does it actually begin life? Is it when there is conscious thought because then, it would not be for a while after the fetus is conceived.

Everyone goes to it. Tans next to it. Frolics in it. Takes a dip in it. Maybe pees in it, if you're five and you really just don't want to walk to the bathroom. Builds a sand castle next to it. Yes, the Ocean. It takes up two thirds of the worlds surface. It is home to more than 20,000 different species of fish and many millions of wildlife.

The Grammys: Timing is Everything

This year the Grammys were tinted with sadness as the world was informed of the loss of one of the greatest singers of our time, Whitney Houston. A tribute to her was sung by Jennifer Hudson, who nearly broke down in tears on the stage. However, with the death of Whitney, the show went on. Adele won six awards total, including best album and best record. The Foo Fighters came away with four. Katy Perry however, came away with a total of zero.

Global Warming

Global Warming has become a major controversial issue in todays society. Some want to argue that it is nothing but a conspiracy, even when evidence is shoved in front of our faces! There is no logic to this argument however some refuse to be swayed by this clear and straightforward evidence. In addition, those that do know about Global Warming and know it's real, don't make an effort to help save and conserve whats left of our beautiful planet. Things as simple as recycling and turning off lights is a feat we simply cannot accomplish.

Pro-choice Argumentation

Abortion Protesters

Abortion is a controversial issue in todays society. Most people from religious backgrounds argue that you're murdering a person by getting an abortion. Most people who are either not religious or apart of the science community argue that it is not murder because a fetus is not a baby and it is not a being capable of conscious thought. Recently, I've been researching Abortion and arguments for and against it. One of the arguments(previously stated) was that it is considered murder.
