So as many might remember there was a protest in Egypt, and how the government was in charge. If not then the link above(hopefully) will take you to a place where you can read and refresh your brain. With government in charge, many people were unhappy with the president, and he eventually stepped down from power, to great happiness of the Egyptians.

Time to Move On From High School...

Discussion by: Gallifrey on Sun, 2012-05-06 21:54 with 1 comments

Oh these last four years of high school have just passed so much quicker than one might have originally thought. I just can't stop counting the days till we graduate, but I'm not sure if that is from not being able to wait any more or reminding myself how much more time I have left to cherish...maybe both.

I have learned quite a lot too, let's just focus on the academic learning though:

Racism in the Hunger Games.

I am writing about The Hunger Games again, this time the film. I think some may have seen this already(the link, not the movie). I ment to post it on Sunday, but instead am doing so now.

So The Hunger Games movie just came out a while ago, I haven't seen it yet, but I heard it's good. But some would disagree about the movie's quality; some might say that racism is no longer a big issue in the world today, that it doesn't occur much. However here... is a little something:

Do looks matter?

I saw the play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand a while back and it made me think. In the play the male lead(Cyrano) is in love wt a distant cousin, but doesn't think he could be loved by anyone because he has a big nose, yet he is an amazing poet, soldier, and many other things.

Sleep scheduals.

Personaly I don't like sleep, there are so many interesting things to do, learn and read that I don't end up going to sleep at a reasonable time. I understand that I need sleep, that it's important, and so I'm lucky to get that sleep on weekends and on some school days(depends on events of the day). I have such irregular sleeping patterns however, that I don't really have a bed time anymore, and sometimes I can't get to sleep(and I don't know if it's because I have other things to do or because I ruined my schedual.)

Firemen: Always Ready, No Matter What.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kidsskux8T8 That's how it's done.

I just felt it necessary to share this video, it was originally from CNN but youtube.com was quicker in loading.

It's great to know that firefighters are always ready in case of an emergency, no matter what. Just so there is no confusion, I have nothing against people cross-dressing(and yes I know this was for a cause) I just don't want people thinking I dislike this in anyway.

Evolution of Music.

Discussion by: Gallifrey on Wed, 2012-03-21 22:39 with 0 comments

Music has came a long way; musical instruments have been found with species like Homo Erectus(one of the species of humans before Homo Sapiens). Speculation here, but before that it may have been hummed, or sung, before instruments were made. Millions of years later, and there are many new forms of musical instruments like a piano. But along with the evolution came a written language with which music could be put on paper. Without this great advancement, probably nobody alive today(unless passed down auraly) would have ever heard the music of Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Chopin, Mahler, etc.

Are the Books Always Better Than the Movies?

Discussion by: Gallifrey on Wed, 2012-03-21 21:21 with 0 comments

With The Hunger Games film around the courner, many fans of the books, and who ever they drag with them will see the film. However some books have in the past been made into movies, and those who read the books and saw the movies usually say something along the lines of: "The book was so much better than the movie."

There has been Harry Potter, Eragon, Twilight, Shakespeare, How to Train Your Dragon(loosely based), The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Vow, The Help, The Woman in Black, War Horse, and many, many, many(many!!)others just to name a few some/somewhat recent ones.

Synesthesia

There is this great book called Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks. It is basically how music affects the brain, and is filled with stories about patients who lacked some skill, or had some talent, or disorder that was correlated to music. I really do not give this book enough credit with my words, just read it, it's fantastic!

There is this chapter within however that is about people who have synesthesia; a process in the brain where two perceptions are welded together(such as: sound --> color). Synesthesia has many variations, however Sacks only writes about the musical ones.

Is Film Destroying Mythology?

Discussion by: Gallifrey on Wed, 2012-03-21 00:54 with 0 comments

Movies are great, the music, punch-lines, camera and lighting, special effects, acting, plot, etc. But are movie companies bringing out great movies with amazing plots at the expense of ancient Greek/Roman, Norse and other Mythologies?

Pegasus was rode by Perseus in Clash of the Titans for example, yet in the actual myth concerning Pegasus, Bellerophon rides Pegasus(against the chimera(different myth)). Perseus has the flying sandals from Hermes/Mercury, and Pegasus is born after Medusa is killed when Perseus is flying over a body of water, and a drop of Medusa's blood hits the water.
