"How Creativity Works"

Discussion by: Gallifrey on Wed, 2012-03-21 00:24 with 0 comments

Most of us have at one time or another thought one of the following: "How can I be more creative?" "I'm just not creative enough." "Why are others more creative?" or something where you probably questioned your creative brain.

Well, I have and on NPR just the other day I heard a story about creativity. If you want to hear it the link is(about eight minutes): http://www.npr.org/2012/03/19/148777350/how-creativity-works-its-all-in-...

Are you Face-Blind?

Discussion by: Gallifrey on Mon, 2012-03-19 02:56 with 2 comments

If anyone saw "60 Minutes" today(18/03/12) then you have seen the story about people with face-blindness. For those who have not, I recommend catching up and watching it.

People who are face-blind have trouble(and most of the time cannot) recognize a face by it's features. On the show they had a little boy who had face-blindness, when his mother's photo was placed next to the screen and he saw her face(no hair, since some people can use hair to help recognise), he was unable to tell if that was really his mother.

Is it...winter?

Last week was the beginning of January, and here in Utah, I have always remembered it being cold and snow on the ground, but not this year, this year, it's warm, some days were in the 30's and 40's, and it looks like the end of winter usually does. While that's no summer weather, it's not winter either. In fact December of 2011, didn't have a lot of snow either, and today the sun is out, there is no snow(except a tad left on the ground) and it's about 30 degrees outside...something is wrong.

If anyone has read the script Waiting for Godot by Samiel Beckett, you might see where I am coming from, if not then here is a very quick summary:

Shelfari

There is this awesome website online called shelfari.com supported by Amazon.com, it's been up for a few years, but I didn't know about it till only a while ago. It's a free website that allows you to make an account and add all the books you have, are, or plan to read. It's a great way to keep track, you can follow friends, and look at each other's shelves. You are able to write your summary of the book, give it a rating, if it's a favorite or not. If that weren't good enough, the website also shows you what books are popular right now, based on what the users are reading.

The Hunger Games

I recently read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, a fiction trilogy set in the future in which ever year twenty-four people must be picked/volunteer(rare) to be a tribute, and participate in "the Games", where they will kill each other until only one is left standing. The Games were made in order to remind people in the districts of Panam(basically North America), that the government(The Capitol) has power over the people, and what happens when they revolt.

Are you studying, or just on Facebook...again?

Discussion by: Gallifrey on Thu, 2012-01-12 01:52 with 1 comments

Finals are quite the big deal, they are what they sound like, final chance to see how much you learned in one semester. Many people have been studying for their finals but some get sidetracked. Without names, there have been comments on Facebook, with people saying that they should be studying instead of sitting on Facebook, but that doesn't work a bit. There have been some comments of people having studied a tad, but then they got dragged into Facebook.

Catholics will be changing Mass.

If you are Catholic, or someone who read an article or heard about it...it's true. The Catholic mass will change to a different translation than we have been using. We'll probably have to think more about the words we are speaking when we say something, which is good in the way that we will pay more attention to what we say, rather than memorized sounds. What do you think? Will better translations really make people think about what they say, or will they just read it off a paper, when it's time, and not pay attention?

Greece gets a new Prime Minister.

Discussion by: Gallifrey on Thu, 2011-11-10 14:42 with 0 comments

Greece, whose economy isn't doing well, recently announced that they have a new Prime Minister, who used to be/is an economist. Lucas Papademos(the new Prime Minister) has plans on taking Greece far away from bankruptcy and getting Greece to have a stronger economic standing. As Greece is a part of the European Union, not only will he help Greece, itself, but also the union, ad then possibly other countries that aren't a part of the union. What do you think about Greece getting a new Prime Minister? Do you think he can help their economy?

Plane lands in the ocean off the coast of Hawaii.

When I was watching the news last night, I saw a story of a man landing a small plane in the ocean, just off the coast of Hawaii, after having lost all fuel. Having landed(water-ed) the man got out and was taken by a helicopter to saftey. This reminded me of "The Miracle on the Hudson" and how both times fatal damages were avoided. Captain Sully Sullenberger had been trained in the air force, with his experience paying off. And now, just recently, the man coached by the coast gaurd in the time before the landing, ended up, getting out alive.
