High School:

Early Childhood

Discussion by: AlexVanDongen on Tue, 2012-05-01 14:54 with 0 comments

An early childhood memory; how do you write about an early memory with someone who is not yet here. My baby sister is still about 3 months away from birth. So how can I write about a memory? This question puzzled me at first, I was not sure how to go about it. However now I find myself writing about camping trips we have gone on while she was in my moms stomach. I tell her about all the details, all the activities, and all the fun we had.

For my exit project I am writing to my new baby sister. The project will be titles baby no name. My family is still undecided on a name, hence "baby no name". I want my new sister to know who I was for 18 years before she came into my life. My project will be a memoir of everything I have done and who I have become prior to her existence. The project will consist for three pieces of writing, mixed with pictures, and small baby toys to connect the project.

This article talks about three men who are said to be the only successful escapist of Alcatraz. John and Clarence Anglin and Frank Lee Morris were the three men who somehow managed to slip away from the constant and heavy security of Alcatraz Prison.

The elaborate plan of the these three men was thought out, reorganized, and worked on until almost perfect. They began their escape by chipping away at an air vent that lead to outside. They made fake grills out of cardboard to cover the holes and help them to blend into the ceiling.

My topic is Alcatraz; I think it is a very interesting topic, especially when you start to look at the infamous prisoners and its intriguing legends. The down side about having a topic that doesn’t have much recent news is that i am more limited when it comes to finding information. Many of the search engines we have used as a class have not been very helpful to me. Twitter/blogs did not have anything about the history of Alcatraz and most of the posts/tweets were about the TV show.

Ebsco and New York Times

I found the two best online resources to be EBSCO and the New York Times. I had to go through EBSCO to get to relevant New York Times articles Most of the information I found was historical or about the prison now. I did not find too much information about the prisoners themselves except for the fact that Alcatraz held some of the countries most dangerous criminals. the New York Times not only gave me the most information on my topic but also was the easiest to use. The other sites were not easy to navigate around and often gave you non relevant articles.

Online Library Resources

The online library resources I found to be helpful, however, maybe for topics that due with current events. the assignment in class was to use the online library resources to find information, from certain sources, on your topic. My topic is Alcatraz, and I found that the online databases had a very limited amount of historical information on my topic. There were many topics on current events involving Alcatraz such as tourist news and the new TV serious about Alcatraz. I did find some useful information on my topic although it took awhile to search for it all.

Choreography

This year for our spring dance concert I am choreographing a dance. My dance focuses on the battle between the body and an invading virus. I have found choreography to be much more complicated than I had originally planned.

It is hard to envision 14 people dancing on a stage, doing your movement, but doing it on different counts, with different places, and different ways of performing it. All in all it is something that takes a lot of practice as well as a lot of patients.

Gun Purchase Limitations

There are many laws and limitations that prohibit people from obtaining fire arms. To many these rules may seem silly and over protective; but when we really analyze how much of a public threat a gun is if it is in unstable hands we would all agree that it is important that we take the purchase of firearms seriously. The article “Permit to Buy Ammunition and Limits on Hand Gun Purchases” explains clearly many of the limitations that come into play when buying a fire arm. Rules like no one who is a former fugitive or addicted to any kind of substance cannot legally carry a gun.

Senior Year

Senior year is getting closer and closer to being over. Although I am incredibly excited for high school to finally be over I can't help but reflect on my years at Judge Memorial Catholic High School. I have made so many friends and have been part of such a great community. High school, from my perspective, develops by year. Freshman year everyone is new; the excitement of new place, new people, and new teachers are overwhelming. Freshman year is your year to just get to know people. Sophomore year is the year for drama.
