9/11 Memorial

The 21st century so far has certainly been one to remember. So many life-altering and world-changing events have happened, it is sometimes to hard to keep track. I think that there are far more than three important events that have happened in the 21st century, but here are three that I found to be particularly important.

Twitter and Blogs: The Italian Mafia

Today I looked at Twitter and Google blog sites to try and find some more information about the Italian mob's presence in Las Vegas. Twitter was not very helpful for this search, because most of the tweets that came up regarding this topic were about the show "Mob Wives" or the group Swedish House Mafia playing a show in Las Vegas. I found one article about the Italian mafia's image in Italy today, but this was not very helpful for my search about their past in Las Vegas. Therefore I turned to the blogs hoping to find some more useful information.

The Italian Mafia: The Experts

For my research paper on the Italian Mafia's presence in Vegas, I will be trying to contact at least two experts in this area. The first person I am trying to contact is Ellen B. Knowlton. Knowlton is the President of the new Mob Museum in Las Vegas. She served as a Special Agent of the FBI for 24 years, with her career ending as the Special Agent in Charge, Las Vegas Division. During her career, she led many investigations into terrorism activities in the Middle East and Europe. She also took part in the FBI's counterintelligence program. I am hoping that Ms.

My research continues with the Italian mafia's presence in Vegas. I learned some more about the present day Italian mafia. There are approximately 25,000 members total with 250,000 affiliates worldwide. The Italian's mafia's activities are international with affiliates in Canada, South America, Australia, and many parts of Europe. The major threats that this mob poses to America are problems relating to drug trafficking and money laundering.

As I have continued to do research for my paper on the Italian Mafia and their control over Las Vegas for decades, I have come across some more interesting information. A man who came up quite often in my search was named Oscar Goodman. Goodman ran for Mayor of Las Vegas in 1999. Many people were against Goodman, and called him a "mob lawyer." Goodman has many mafia connections in his past, and he is known for representing many prominent Mob figures, including Anthony Spilotro and Frank Rosenthal.

For an upcoming research paper, I have decided to research the Italian Mafia, specifically during the time when they ran most of Las Vegas. I have always been interested in various mafias around the world, and have already done a lot of research about them. While of course I do not like organized crime, the way in which mafias run and operate has always fascinated me. Since the topic of mafias is such a broad one, I am focusing on the Italian Mafia, and their rule in Las Vegas.

Abortion and Politics

In a previous discussion, I talked about the issue of abortion that has come up in the 2012 election. Abortion is a very controversial subject that comes up in politics very often. There are two very different opposing viewpoints, pro-life and pro-choice. The issue of abortion often divides political figures, and is a key arguing point in political debates. While I was raised Catholic and am still Catholic, my view on abortion does not go along with Catholic teaching. Catholic teaching says that abortions are not good because they are destroying a human life.

Abortion Issue- Election 2012

Among the many issues that I looked into that are coming up in the 2012 elections, abortion is one that I am highly interested in. An abortion is defined as being “a medical or surgical procedure that ends a pregnancy.” Abortions have been a highly controversial issue in the United States for many decades. The main divergent view about abortion come in terms of “when human life begins, the rights a woman has over her own body, and government interference in the private lives of individuals.”

Political Views

After taking the political surveys, I think I am pretty sure about which issues I care most about in the upcoming election. While I did not have strong opinions about a lot of the topics presented, there were a few that I care strongly about. These issues include gun control, abortion, and environmental protection.

Orwell's Train of Thought

As I have begun to read the novel 1984, by George Orwell, for my English class, I have become quite fascinated with the author, George Orwell. I have not read a great deal of the book, but from what I have read so far, the future that Orwell writes about is quite grim. All the people are mind-controlled by the government, and individual action and thought is not allowed. It is referred to as "Thoughtcrime" and is punished severely. The people eat what they are told, say what they are told to say, write what they are told to write, and wear the clothes they are told to wear.
