If I am teaching a unit on the novel,OF MICE AND MEN,by John Steinbeck, or any novel, I am always concerned with how well students are reading and understanding the text.
Keeping a journal as they read is one way they can keep track of what they are reading, and how they are responding to the text.GOOGLE DOCs, would offer a great way for the students to keep the journal on-line and then invite others in the class to comment on their journal entries.
There's an interesting conversation in Youth Voices where a student compares one book with Of Mice and Men. Students could then access that student's comments, using the indicated (color-coded) link, and while on that page, they would see other students' reactions to Steinbeck's book, as well as reactions to other literary works which students have read and are discussing.
This kind of on-line discussion, might hopefully, get the students thinking about Steinbeck's work in a different way, and it might even entice them to read the titles other students are reading!
