Something that I have been interested in learning more about has been
the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. I remember my mother talking about it when it happened, but I didn’t learn about it much because I was working and I barely had time to watch the news. It was all over the news and media, so much different information they had I didn’t want to get confused so i figured i’d wait until the real story was set.
If you've read my previous articles then you know that I'm researching everything about Anti-Socials, and mental health altogether. Mental health is not taken seriously in the U.S. The majority of people cannot get money from insurance companies to see a psychologist, and if they do happen to have that on their insurance plan, it is only for a few secessions, clearly not enough time to make any difference.
I was always interested in the Sandy Hook shooting, except that I never had time for being informed on what happened. Till recently that my teacher told me if I was interested in doing my next research topic on the Sandy Hook shooting. Since at my job I get a few hours of free time I figured why not and also those long train rides where I do nothing most of the time. I began reading the articles of what happened. I was heartbroken to see that it was children who were killed. Just to imagine and picture these graphic images it makes me wonder what the heck was Lanza thinking.
The most important thing people should realize about schizophrenia is that people that suffer from this disease can live just as normally as you and me. There are still many questions that surround the cause and treatment of schizophrenia, but the main reason there is such a huge stigma surrounding it is simply because of our ignorance and failure to educate ourselves.
In Liza Long’s article, “I am Adam Lanzas Mother” Long, L. (2013) I am Adam Lanzas Mother. The Blue Review, [blog] 12/15/2012, Available at: http://thebluereview.org/i-am-adam-lanzas-mother/ [Accessed: 2nd January 2013]., the author really was trying to make a connection and really write upon the mothers experience on what happened to her child.
Although there are probably thousands of experts to contact regarding schizophrenia, one in particular that stood out to me is the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). This Past September, a few friends and I participated in the 5k NAMI walk for mental illness, in which $112,000 was raised to go towards support and services for those suffering with mental illnesses in Utah. It was an amazing experience and all of the individuals whom I interacted with, many who had lost friends and family due to suicide because of a mental illness, were all so inviting and informative.
I’m interested in the homeless population because I think it is a serious problem that our nation tends to ignore. In my opinion, one of the leading causes for homelessness is the fact that it is so difficult to get a job. Another reason is that our health insurance programs aren’t easy to become a part of either. A lot of people who are homeless have some kind of mental illness, and with the insurance being the way it is, they can’t find treatment/get a job and they become homeless.
My topic is about autistic kids and adults. I’ve chosen this topic because it really caught my attention learning about autism and also because I have a little brother who is autistic and I had notice that they act different than us and that there are many different kind of autistic problems that someone can suffer. What made me interested in autism was that I wanted to learn the causes of autism in kids/adults and also see the way my little brother acts unlike others with different behaviors.
Something that I have been interested in learning more about has been, What goes through the minds of killers and rapists?( or others who commit violent crimes) I remember my mom talking about it when it came up in the news and she was saying that people that kill or rape had went threw some mess up things in their lives, but I didn’t pay that much attention to it because I didn’t watch the news that much. Lately, the issue has caught my eyes again. I know that many people have their own opinions on killer and rapists.
The Bell Jar is a novel written by the poet Silvia Plath, it chroncles the life of bright talented Esther and her eventual deterioration into madness. Although the Bell Jar is set in the 50s its themes cross cut the decades to touch each generation of reader. In the novel Esther describes herself as a prized racehorse who has no more reaces to run, all esther was good at was winning scholarships and studying, but now that college is comming to a close she has no idea what to do with all her so called talent. As we continue to grow and live our lives there will come a time were we too will have to leave the sancutary of books, deadlines, and homework and for many the departure will be welcome and exciting. However some will feel esthers plight touch them deeply, because learning is safe its applying that knowledge thats scary
