In "1984" by George Orwell, Winston works at the Ministry of Truth. He edits past letters, papers, and newspaper articles in order to make them conform with current party doctrine. In his office there are three wall slits: one where directions come from, one for him to place edited letters in, and one for him to place edited newspapers in. He receives directions and often edits past articles, changing details, removing "vaporized people", amongst other things. In one part, a Colonel Withers has been disgraced, and likely executed.
