I do not support federal gun control laws because they are unconstitutional. I also do not support them because they have not been proven to actually lessen the rate of violent crime in the United States.
The first article I read was called Gun Control Facts (Agresti & Smith, 2011) and it included several surveys that discussed the effects of guns on the population. For example, this article said that of the 5, 340,000 violent crimes committed in the U.S. only 8% were committed by someone with a gun.
The right to to keep and bear arms was guaranteed to citizens with the second amendment of the United States Constitution. Since that time there has been much debate over what extent states should be allowed to regulate and control the sell and purchase of firearms. Although many argue firearms are a necessary precaution against a possible governmental tyranny, the need for extensive citizen ownership of firearms has decreased dramatically.
