Speakeasies of the Prohibition were very exclusive and all had their own “clientele”. In order to gain entrance, most speakeasies required a key. The key may be an actual key, a password, an object such as a small ball and chain, or a membership card. Speakeasies had to obtain their liquor from Mobsters. The Mobsters were almost like celebrities during this time. The culture of Mobsters was brutal and were involved in a gang-like society that committed murder of other gangsters. By 1931, speakeasies were a serious business.
