During the summer before 10th grade, I didn’t really do anything eventful or amazing. I went to Albany for three days to visit my family. They had bought a new house and we hadn’t seen them in a while. My cousin and his wife had three kids and a huge garden. There were bees in their background and lots of flowers. I went shopping to a nearby mall and to the Mosque on Friday to pray. We had a barbecue and the food was good. My mom made sweets for the occasion and told me to make a cake. I was hesitant at first to make one, but I finally did. It was delicious.
My name is Joshua and I am a student in the Bronx at a school called I.S. 190. I am a 8th grader. I wanted to say congratulations to you on your election. The city has issues around jobs and unemployment.
The situation in my family is that both my parents are not working. A while ago my father was going to become a cop. He was in the police academy but he lost his position when he failed the running test. Then my mother was the only one working but a week later she lost her job. It was very hard to see my parents struggling with money.
In the Editorial's Board opinion piece,"To Make A Safe CIty Safer," from The New York Times published in July 21, 2013 , the author summarizes the idea that the next New York City mayor will have an important legacy to protect which is the reduction of crimes that the actual Mayor Michael Bloomberg has been able to make in the city.
When John C. Liu takes office in NYC minimum wage jobs is an issue John C. Liu and the city council will need to propose a solution to. I feel that the minimum wage should be increased to his ideal amount of $11.50 an hour.
If Christine Quinn becomes the next mayor of New York City, discrimination and gangs are an issue that Quinn and the council will need to deal with this is an important issue that Quinn has to solve because many people die because of discrimination and gangs.
"Steady Decline in Major Crime Baffles Experts", by Richard A. Oppel Junior is very educational. This article educates people of crimes in the United States. Especially New York City, New York.
Sadly "crime rates, the city saw increase in all four types of violent lawbreaking-murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault". While I was reading this, I was disappointed of how high the rate of crimes went up. It makes me wonder why people do crimes(rape, steal, and murder), It doesn't make sense. Just what goes on in their minds?
Hurricane Sandy was a very terrifying time for many families in Zone A and in Long Island. Many houses were flooded and houses in Breezy Point caught on fire. Also, in the Rockaway's they were many homes and roads filled with sand. Sadly trees caused a great disaster. Trees and pulled down power lines which caused many houses to be out of power. People till now, still have no power, 7 days after the hurricane. Sadly, schools were used as shelters for families that don't have food or warmth. This caused schools to be closed Monday-Friday and schools resumed Monday, November 5th.
After Hurricane Sandy has passed, the main feeling going through my head is lucky. I am very lucky that I or any of my loved ones were hurt. Though nobody I know was hurt, many were affected. Most of my step dad's family lives in New Jersey, and many of them near the shore. They had to evacuate to a more safe area, leaving their homes and boats behind. My step dad went over this weekend to help his family and assess the damage, and flooding has caused tons of damage. Fallen trees have also affected them, one falling on his sister's house.
The Velvet Underground are a phenomenon because they are one of the most influential bands of all time, yet their popular appeal is insignificant. Their first album, The Velvet Underground & Nico, came out in 1967-the summer of love. In terms of popular culture, this year is synonymous with the hippie movement. And the Velvet Underground were the first to prelude that the movement was doomed to fail. For every value that the hippie culture stood for, the velvets claimed an opposing value. Hippies valued free love, and the velvets sang about S&M.
The Book I’m reading now, gives off good interest about a family that just moved to the borough Bronx of new york city, and been living there for about six years now, they came from Puerto Rico. The book talks about how they had to adjust to the living environment's of the way things go in the Bronx, the trains, buses, and the large crowds of people. One things for sure they were lucky to have was a father who provides for them and always thanked Jesus Christ for that. '
In this video you'll see a friend I used to go to John F. Kennedy High School with. French Montana and Jadakiss make this song valid. It's called "New York Minute." It represents how quick anything can change in New York, and it's true. This city can make or break you in one second.
For digital photography class, we were asked to take a photo that is inspired by either a work of literature, or a song. I choose the song "Human," by The Killers. In the photo, the people are dancing, though they're poses in the photo are similar to photos of the evolution of humans. In the song, one of the lines is "Are we human, or are we dancers." I felt that this photo represented this line perfectly, as it had included both aspects of the line. I edited the photo by working with hue, enhancing the color of the photo, making it sharper, and giving the photo an overall painting effect.
These are two photos that I took during my digital photography class throughout my school. I choose to take these two photos because the signs in both of the photos interested me. I took these photos on macro mode, to get a better look at the images/words on the signs. I also edited them in iPhoto, to put my style of photography into the images. These two photos show what one locker and one part of a hallway at ElRo looks like, and could give the viewer a generalization of the mood of the school.
Annie Liebovitz is an American portrait photographer. She was born on October, 2nd, 1949, in Waterbury Connecticut. She is notable for taking photos of famous musicians, actors and other influential people. I choose this photographer because his famous photo of John Lennon is the last photo ever taken of John Lennon. Her work interests me because it has so much to say, through so little subjects. I feel that photography should be used to tell stories, and her work does just that. This photo appeared in Rolling Stones Magazine. Annie Liebovitz does not have a personal website, but her photos are all over magazines, galleries, and the internet.
In the Sound of Music Julie Andrews sings about her favorite things. I'm not sure how that started a photograpy project, but it did. We found out that a class that we work with in Salt Lake City was doing a project about their favorite things, so we decided to do it too. That seems like an easy thing to do right? Well, sometimes the easiest things in life are the hardest to do. I decided to upload a photo that I took in my schools hallway. The photo shows the back of a girl holding her hands in a heart, and the background is a collage made by one of the art classes. When I took this photo I thought it would be cool to do a faceless portrait. This lead to my friend holding different symbols. The one with the heart struck me the most because I feel like the photo itself tells a photo; even though theirs no face to tell it. Also, the background of the photo shows the importance of art in life. I didn't get interested in art until realized that photography counted as a part of it. I know it seems weird to think that photography wasn't a main type of art, but photography only became more popular recently.
When you take a photo, you never really know how it will turn out. You can adjust your camera to the best levels. style your model, or set up your still, but you still don't know how it will turn out. I think thats the cool thing about photography, you can't take a perfect photo from just looking at through the lens. Your eye is the real talent in photography, but even your eye will trick you.
Since our first unit of photography this year was playing with lights, I thought this picture was a great way to show different types of light photography. On saturday night I was with my friends on my other friends roof, and I thought it was really intriguing how the background of the buildings lights and the darkness of my friends on the roof contrasted. I meant to take a picture that wasn't blurry, but my camera has an effect where it can make the objects in the picture appear double. I think it's so interesting how the blurriness of this picture made my friends look like there was a ghost coming out of their bodies. I also love how the lights make the image look as if we're standing on a roof in Las Vegas, right above the strip. This picture gives off an illusion.
Right now I believe that I am only just beginning to discover what kind of photos i would like to be taking. Last year I took pictures of basically anything, I didn't look for anything that held any meaning for me as a photographer. However, this year I think that I am starting to actually find scenes that i find interesting enough to take a picture. The above picture, I took on second avenue in New York City (I don't know what street), and i liked how i could see the sky changing as I looked deeper into the background, as well as how you can see buildings lined up going down the avenue. This year I would like to continue my search for scenes that I find meaning in, or that i find interesting.
When the year began, I explored sunsets and sunrises. I looked at the many variations of sunsets and the different colors brought out in sunsets. However, I soon tired of my theme and looked to explore something else. When the weather permitted we would go outside to take "neighborhood walks" in which we would walk around our neighborhood exploring the different signs of spring. It was on those walks that I became fascinated by the many colors in the flowers that had just begun to bloom. So rather than colors in sunsets and sunrises I began to look at the beautiful colors seen in the Spring Time flowers.
New York City is a large city filled with adventure and experiences. I have the most exciting time in the city playing basketball. My work reflects my life in New York and the time I spend on the court. I play basketball almost everyday and strive to get somewhere in life with this exciting sport. Basketball is sport that has more exposure in New York city then any other place in the United States. If you go to any park you will find kids and young adults playing. When taking a picture of the sport basketball it makes you wonder what just happened or is about to happen. This feeling is what really got me to photographing baskeball. When doing my work I focus on making it interesting and the idea of whether I would look at the image if I were to see it in the street. Another important aspect in doing my work is using pictures that are important to me. I feel that my work must have pictures which I took and with which I have a personal connection.
When I work with photoshop, I am reminded that photography consists of many diverse and complex ways to create an artisitic piece that is representive of what the artist him/herself wants to present. There are many steps that are put into creating a photo that is inspiring to others as well as the photographer. Photoshop consists of many tools that can that can be used to enhance the look of a photo. My favorite tool to use in photoshop when I am working on a photo is the lasso tool as well as the smudge tool. These tools help me greatly to blend different photos together to create a piece that is representive of what I think of the world and my life.
Something I have become interested in learning more about is everyday life in New York City. I started to become interested in Lee Friedlander because his photographs are mainly taken during the middle of the 20th century in New York City and other famous places in America. This way, I can easily compare and contrast pictures of how New York City and other main cities developed from time to time. So far I have learned that he focused on social landscape. Some of his work is posted in many museums here in New York City including the Museum of Modern Art. Some of the museums or public art galleries can be found here. The image below was from this site.
Something I have become interested in learning more about is . I started to become interested in Ansel Adams because he took pictures of things I didn't think could be captured. He also took amazing photos from all over America.. So far I have learned that color sin't the only thing that bring out detail. All of Ansel Adam's work is in black and whit and the are all filled with detail and have so much to them. They also capture nature in a very beautiful way.
Something I have become interested in learning more about is using fashion photography in music photography. I started to become interested in Craig McDean because I loved how he played with colors in his photos. So far I have learned he is famous for his fashion photography.
